The program is intended to develop young people's skills and confidence to become actively involved in their local community by developing:

Japanese

This course aims to promote student's ability to communicate in Japanese through oral/Aural and written tasks. Learners will extend their understanding of Japanese language functions and learn to appreciate diversity through culture.

Music

Students must undertake to study a musical instrument for the year. Students have a weekly lesson provided by an instrumental music teacher on their chosen woodwind, brass, guitar or percussion instrument. Woodwind and brass instruments can be hired from the school. Students are expected to own or have regular access to guitars or percussion instruments if choosing these.

Students will develop skills in basic music theory, aural and practical and will study music history.

Students will attend normal music lessons during the week PLUS a half hour instrumental lesson.

Semester Courses

Art

This is a general visual arts course. Students will be covering the practical and theoretical aspects of Craft, Design and Art with an emphasis on the recording of the processes undertaken. For example, students will be involved in drawing, painting, t-shirt printing and clay modelling.

Clotex

Clotex is a great subject for a student who enjoys craft and design combined into one. Students learn many new skills; from stretch sewing to cross stitch, learning all the tricks of the trade. Visits to Spotlight and the Cleve Field Days to learn about various fabrics, hobbies and crafts that can lead to a career in this area.

Computer Studies

This course provides an ICT base for students studying at Stuart High School. It is practically orientated. Students will be working on tasks and instruction is given during the process.

Drama

This course aims to develop students' self-confidence and other positive interpersonal skills. It is designed to develop knowledge and skills in:

through a variety of tasks which mainly involve group work. Students will be involved in creating, rehearsing and presenting a range of group performances. They will also explore historical and cultural influences on Drama (via both theory and performance work).

Food and Nutrition

Health and Physical Education

Health & Physical Education is designed to develop student's skills and knowledge in the area of physical fitness and activity through participation in sports based activities. There is an emphasis on working well in teams and learning the skills and rules of specific sports.

The health component looks in detail at changes that occur during puberty and the developing sexuality of a person. In particular an understanding of the reproductive system, contraception and abstinence. Other topics include smoking and peer pressure.

Students will be involved in group discussions, assignment work and a theme based approach to learning a variety of sports. Students are required to wear appropriate clothing for participation in physical activities. A consent form will be sent home before the sexuality component of the Health course commences.

Society and Environment

The course provides students with the opportunities to develop decision making skills, knowledge and attitudes that will equip them for effective participation in our local, national and global community. The students will study units of work that are of an environmental, geographical, historical and social nature.

Specialist Physical Education

Specialist Physical Education provide opportunities for students to develop skills and pursue careers in physical education and sport. Support is also provided to talented sport students to assist them in balancing their sporting and education commitments.

Technology Studies

This course provides an introduction to Technology using a variety of media including woodworking, plastics, graphics, metal working and photography. The emphasis is towards encouraging students to enjoy the processes of planning, creating, problem solving and developing a range of theoretical and practical skills with a technological bias.
